NovAtel Inertial Explorer v11.1

NovAtel Inertial Explorer 11.1 is professional GNSS+INS post-processing software from NovAtel, part of the Hexagon positioning portfolio. It is designed to process GNSS and inertial measurement data and generate accurate post-mission position, velocity, and attitude trajectories for applications such as mobile mapping, aerial surveying, hydrographic surveying, UAV mapping, and autonomous systems.

What is Inertial Explorer 11.1?

Inertial Explorer combines GNSS processing with IMU/INS processing to produce a high-quality trajectory from post-mission survey data. It supports both loosely coupled and tightly coupled GNSS+INS processing, as well as differential GNSS and Precise Point Positioning (PPP).

The software is suitable for:

  • Aerial mapping and surveying
  • UAV and drone mapping
  • Mobile mapping
  • Hydrographic surveying
  • Land surveying
  • Photogrammetry
  • LiDAR mapping
  • Autonomous vehicle research
  • GNSS/INS system development

Key Features of Inertial Explorer 11.1

1. Advanced GNSS+INS Processing

Inertial Explorer integrates GNSS and inertial measurements to generate precise trajectory information.

It supports:

  • GNSS-only processing
  • GNSS+INS processing
  • Loosely coupled processing
  • Tightly coupled processing
  • Differential GNSS / PPK
  • Precise Point Positioning (PPP)
  • Single- and multi-base processing

The tightly coupled approach can maintain useful navigation performance when satellite availability is limited because GNSS and inertial measurements are processed together.

2. Multi-Constellation GNSS Support

Inertial Explorer supports major GNSS constellations and frequencies, including:

  • GPS
  • GLONASS
  • BeiDou
  • Galileo
  • QZSS

It can also work with multiple GNSS correction sources and supports up to 32 base stations per project.

3. High-Accuracy Trajectory Generation

The software generates trajectory outputs containing:

  • Position
  • Velocity
  • Attitude
  • Heading
  • Roll
  • Pitch

These results can serve as a reference trajectory for downstream applications such as LiDAR point-cloud generation, aerial imagery processing, and mobile mapping.

4. Boresight & Lever-Arm Calibration

Inertial Explorer provides dedicated tools for estimating and refining relationships between GNSS/INS equipment and vehicle or sensor frames.

The software supports:

  • IMU-to-vehicle boresight calibration
  • IMU-to-camera frame alignment
  • GNSS antenna-to-IMU lever-arm estimation
  • Attitude reference-frame conversion

This is particularly useful when integrating GNSS+INS with cameras, LiDAR scanners, and other mapping sensors.

5. Application-Specific Processing Profiles

Inertial Explorer includes predefined processing profiles for:

  • Airborne systems
  • Ground vehicles
  • UAVs
  • Pedestrian mapping
  • Marine surveying

A Project Wizard helps users import data, configure projects, process trajectories, and generate quality-control results.

6. Quality Control & Analysis

Inertial Explorer provides HTML-based quality-control reports and detailed trajectory analysis.

Version 11.1 adds new QC plots covering parameters such as:

  • Fixed combined separation
  • Heading/azimuth
  • Roll and pitch
  • Velocity
  • Position misclosure
  • Multi-base distance
