CMG Suite v2026.20: Reservoir Simulation & Energy Transition Updates
CMG Suite v2026.20 is the second-quarter 2026 release of Computer Modelling Group’s reservoir simulation platform, focusing on multiphysics coupling, energy transition simulation, and complex physics mechanisms, alongside a significant solver performance gain.
Key New Features
Energy Transition & Underground Storage
-
H₂ Underground Storage (STARS): STARS adds dual Monod reaction kinetics, enabling direct simulation of biologically mediated reactions (e.g., methanation, acetate formation) in their original Monod form. This supports realistic modeling of microbial and biomass-driven processes, biomass growth/decay dynamics, and extended Monod setups with three or more rate-limiting factors, applicable to underground H₂ storage and biogeochemical conversion .
-
GEM Multi-Stream Injection: Multi-stream injection capability extends from STARS to the GEM compositional simulator, supporting time-varying compositions and multi-source blending for impurity-containing injection streams, relevant to carbon storage and EOR.
-
CO₂ & Pure-Component EOS (CoFlow): Adds the Span-Wagner EOS for pure CO₂ calculations, extends pure-component models to water + pure-component systems, and adds interfacial tension (IFT) calculations.
Complex Physics Mechanisms
-
Four-Phase Isothermal Flash (STARS): Supports simultaneous equilibrium of water, gas, oil, and a solvent-rich liquid phase in thermal simulation, applicable to SAGD and other thermal recovery processes.
-
Knudsen Diffusion (GEM): Models gas transport in nanoscale pore throats, capturing the transition from Darcy flow to Knudsen flow for shale gas and tight gas reservoirs.
-
Adsorption-Dependent Relative Permeability/Capillary Pressure Interpolation (GEM): Dynamically interpolates relative permeability and capillary pressure curves based on component adsorption amounts.
