ICAM CAM-POST can read toolpath files generated by the covered CAD/CAM software and customize dedicated post-processors for the covered NC systems.
The software is mainly divided into the following two parts
1. QUEST: Database template system.
The database template contains solutions to various issues that may arise with different types of machine tools and control systems. Users can customize the database by answering questions based on their specific needs. When the database template does not meet user requirements, macro programs can be developed using Post-Processor Development for further customization.
2. GENER:
Using QUEST to generate the database, toolpath files generated by the CAM system are converted into NC programs that can be directly recognized by CNC machine tools.
ICAM’s CAM-POST possesses the processing capabilities required for high-speed machining, supporting four types of surface fitting models: Bezier, NURBS, Polynomial, and Spline. Expert system tools are also integrated into QUEST, significantly expanding the software’s functionality.
It can process toolpath files in various formats and optimize them to accommodate different types of machines, systems, and part processing requirements. The generated NC programs can be directly applied to machines, representing the development direction of post-processing technology.
Advantages
1. Quick and efficient implementation
CAM-POST offers over 200 default quick-start options for NC controllers, simplifying and accelerating the creation of post-processing programs. As a standard feature, CAM-POST includes a unique, fully-featured “point-and-click” wizard that enables beginners to quickly and effectively generate advanced NC post-processing programs.
This wizard guides users through all the steps involved in creating an NC post-processing program. Creating a post-processing program involves defining the machine tool’s kinematics, establishing the coordinate axis system, determining the displacement boundaries, and setting the rotation center offset distance. The intuitive graphical interface provided by the graphical illustrations makes this process straightforward.
Virtual Machine is used for integrated machine simulation synchronized with post-processing.
The integration of Virtual Machine with CAM-POST provides a powerful tool for machine visualization simulation, enabling NC programmers to freely and automatically perform visualization testing and simulation of programs, thereby eliminating collisions during post-processing.
The machine tool and controller data used by the Virtual Machine and CAM-POST are stored in the same database. This eliminates the risk of errors in non-integrated solutions and saves time by avoiding the need to input the same machine tool and controller data twice.
2. Intuitive, experience-based methods
CAM-POST provides a “Navigator” to guide post-processing development across broad categories and more specific subcategories. The “Modification Wizard” offers a subset of the full development environment, displaying only the parts of the post-processing program that are frequently updated. CAM-POST’s enhanced functionality allows users to handle complex situations with simple responses, without needing to design development logic using macro commands.
3. Improving NC programmer productivity and manufacturing efficiency
CAM-POST’s “Visual Debugger” tracks and synchronizes CL file input, NC code output, macro code, and diagnostic information generated during post-processing. Users can view and modify any variables in the post-processing program on an integrated single platform. When modifying variables or encountering a breakpoint, users can set or remove breakpoints by clicking on CL records or macro commands with the mouse. CAM-POST’s management capabilities include: full do/undo functionality supporting multiple versions of post-processors, and the ability to compare different post-processing versions via “links” that directly jump to different post-processing specifications; 24/7 online help and a “quick test” button for immediate and convenient testing of modified NC code.
4. Advanced Post-Processing & Multi-Axis Specifications
The introduction of CNC optimization technology can improve part quality, enhance production efficiency, and shorten product development cycles. CAM-POST offers several prominent advantages, providing users with the following advanced multi-axis machining functions according to their requirements.
Advanced linear fitting provides users with control over the tool tip and deflection angle. Linear fitting can be applied within the desired tool length range. Users can also optionally apply linear fitting to RAPID (fast) movements.
5. Rotate-Translate-Rotate (RTA)
is a logical step. During continuous machining, when rotational or linear movement reaches its limit, this step ensures the tool is withdrawn from the material and the tool’s posture is reset. Continuous rotational axis deflection displacement and pre-positioning functions provide uninterrupted five-axis machining capabilities over a broader range. Selecting the correct tool axis position ensures the operator has better visibility or keeps the five axes as coordinated as possible.
6. Rotational Tool Center Point (RTCP)
This is a feature of advanced controllers. This feature allows users to output tool endpoint coordinates instead of control point coordinates. RTCP programming supports actual axes, vectors, two-point, Euler, RPY, or virtual rotational axis control methods. This control calculates kinematic parameters, processing linear fitting and all five-axis tool compensation into simpler, more easily transmissible programs.
7. Local Coordinate System Conversion (LCS)
CAM-POST supports translation, rotation, scaling, mirroring, and adding transformations. It can be set to manually or automatically activate the coordinate system when the tool direction changes. LCS also includes a feature to implicitly identify the most suitable coordinate system from the CAM system. All calculations related to movement, feed, and timing are continuously performed based on the machine tool’s actual physical structure.
